Katmai

Question: Is August a good time to see bears at Katmai National Park?

Will be in Anchorage on 7 August 07 and would love to go somewhere where it's possible to take those classic shots of bears catching salmon. Brooks Falls seems to be the right place, but would it be too late to see bears at that time?  Just want to be sure not to waste our money. If it is too late, what alternatives for bear viewing are there from

Anchorage?

Answer:

From what I’ve heard, I think you would be better off choosing to go somewhere else for bears. The best chance for lots of bears would probably by

Kodiak Island. Contact the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Pilots from the town of Kodiak go wherever bears are present at the moment; the refuge could advise you on whether any large congregations are around when you are planning to travel.
